So yeah haven't played unreal in awhile so when I go to join a server I get an error message asking me to free up some space

Try joining a pure or semi-pure game server to see if that type of crash still happens. If not, it could be that one or more packages loaded on the game server you wanted to join is corrupted in your cache or local installation. You may have to delete and re-download the packages.
