I have just recently been having some problems on Unreal Gold. When Unreal Gold is run in 32-bit color mode, it renders at maybe 5 frames per second. If left in 32-bit color mode the entire computer crashes within 30 seconds or so and the whole thing reboots. It runs perfectly fine in 16-bit color mode, but once in 16-bit mode and the texture and skin qualities are turned on low, if it is switched back to 32-bit mode and the texture and skin qualities are restored to high, it works like normal again. But this probem happens again the next time Unreal is started. I have tried reloading Unreal Gold from scratch as well as reinstalling my video card driver. It worked fine before, but it just decided to start doing this one day. I am still unsure of the problem and wonder if anyone would have any advice. Every other program on my computer works normally. Current system configuration: Cyberpower XP Special - AMD Athlon XP 2500+, 1 GB Corsair XMS PC3200 DDR ram, Maxtor 120GB 7200 RPM hdd, Creative SB Live! 5.1 sound, Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT 128mb AGP 8X video, Kingwin Arctic Liquid Cooler AWC-1

I am still having problems with Unreal on my laptop. It seems to "go too fast" and causes skipping when playing online. It's as if the "slomo" command is on, but it is not. This is the least of my worries right now, but it would be nice if anyone had any ideas. System Configuration: HP Pavillion zv5410us - AMD Athlon 64 3000+, Hitachi 60GB 4200 RPM hdd, Sound MAX Digital Audio, Nvidia GeForce Go 440 64mb video

Both computers are running Microsoft Windows XP SP2.

I would appriciate ANY ideas at all. Thanks

The 32-bit problem: Be sure you run the OldUnreal Multimedia patch in OpenGL mode. Download it from http://www.oldunreal.com.

The too-fast-graphics problem: Enable the option Vertical Synchronisation (VSync) in the video card options. This will make sure the framerate is not higher than the monitor can display.

Thanks for the help. Not only does the open GL patch allow me to once again use the 32-bit color option, but it allows me to use ST3C textures as well. (I thought they didn't work online) although my laptop it is set to force Vsync, I still have speed problems, it doesn't really matter though, I don't use it to play much Unreal anyway.

Well, it's not that it runs slow or lags, it goes too fast. It makes you skip around when you play online. Besides, it's already got 512mb of RAM.

Well, after some time spent with the control panel, I found the issue was with my CPU and not my video card after all. My laptop uses a speedstep technology that changes the CPU speed depending on the current load. When Unreal starts, it detects the cpu speed. Since the computer was running at full power to start the program, once it was open it slowed the cpu speed. Unreal however still thinks it's running at full clock speed. This relates to some speed processing issues as I had mentioned before, but by disabling the speedstep feature by setting the power control panel to "Always on" instead of "Portable/Laptop". This does however increase the heat output of my laptop. So I only disable the speedstep when I'm playing Unreal.
