It's a 2D Space shooter like Gradius/Nemesis, but it's much better. It comes with an awesome MIDI soundtrack by Alexander Brandon. Tyrian was released before Epic started building Unreal. Later, Tyrian was sold to a company called XSIV games which added an all new 5th episode and sold it as Tyrian 2000. Now, when XSIV games is no more, the website Tyrian Repository released it for download. Please note that Tyrian is an old DOS game, requiring an ISA class soundcard like the SoundBlaster 16. When you still have your old 486-Pentium PC, Tyrian will rock it.
