So you wanna game around with some buddies, eh?
You wanna have a big ole LAN party with 100 users,
or maybe just one on one fragtimeparty.
You will be set here with this info
with different styles of doing the same thing, FRAGFEST!

On This Page...
-Direct Cable Connection (DCC)-
-LAN connection-
(scan down using the scan bar >>>>  )

Direct Cable Connect  (DCC)
Win9x only
You need 2 computers!! Wow!
You need a Networking cable (connects between the printer ports- this is actually the
parallel port of the computer.
When you installed Win95,98, etc etc normal install will not
include DCC, so going into settings-Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs,
click the windows setup tab and check under details of communications.
tick the Direct Cable Connection selection, and Dial Up Connection, you need both.
Install these.
Now in the control panel open up Network.
You need the TCP/IP protocol for Unreal games.
If not present, click Add...
click protocol then add
then click Microsoft and select TCP/IP, then OK
Both computers need this.
Now back on the main Network window...
for your server computer, click the TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter then properties.
This opens a new window of TCP/IP properties.
Click the IP Address Tab.
You are about to change the IP address for the computer.
WARNING
This could affect dialup modems, so write down your ISP addy should you need to return to the original settings.
Now click on Specify an IP address.
put the following numbers in (just do it!!!)

IP Address  192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask  255.255.255.0

Click ok, then OK again to close the network window.
Windows will do some work and you may have to have your Win9x disk(s) handy
as it may ask for them, then you will have to reboot the computer.

Tadaa!, part one is done

For the "Client" computer
thats the other one....
Do everything above the same until.....

IP Address  192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

NOW click on Gateway
under New gateway, put.....

192.168.0.1

click Add
Now click OK and Ok
to close all the windows
and reboot.

To start the DCC connection...
On the Server computer....
Click on Start (that famous start button on the bottom left of the screen)
Click on programs, then accessories, then communications, then Direct Cable Connection (whew!)
This opens a  new window with 2 selections.
Click on Host then next.
It may ask for the port you want to use, choose Parallel cable on LPT1.
then Next.
"You have successfully set up the Host Computer!!!"
click finish.
lt will initialize and listen for the client to connect.

For the Client Computer....
the procedure is the same for above except...
select Guest and Next.
It may ask for the port again, select the Parallel Cable on LPT1 and Next.
You have Successfully setup the Guest Computer!!!
It will now connect to the Server (Host)
oh, be sure the cable is connected to the printer ports (parallel)

Go into Unreal, start a server game on the server,
start multiplay on the other,
choose find local servers, select the game in view and yer off!!

LAN Connection
(Local Area Network)

You need..at least 2 computers for LAN play, and LAN cards for each with Coaxial cables
or Phone styled LAN cables.
2 computers only need the coaxial cable but if using the Phone cable, you need the
special cable that shunts the internal wires correctly. (DCC network cable does this for DCC,
same goes for the LAN phone styled cable)
3 computers or more require a Hub (but no special cabling) for the Phone style LAN,
Y adapters for the Coaxial cable BUT needs the Coaxial cap on the last Computer
(this has a simple resistor shunt to even out the proper loading)

This is done by using a LAN card. LAN cards are usually available at computer stores,
yer buddy, or undisclosed sources of ill repute...  (NOT)
I found DLink's family works well as also their drivers are ON the Win98 disk, and their
supplied drivers weren't needed. I have tried other LAN cards without success, but my not be true to you,
choose what works for you.
LAN cards may have 2 connectors on them, one is a coaxial connection, the other is a standard
telephone jack styled Connection (But has more wires than the standard Telephone, so you must use the LAN cable)
Be sure the computer is off and unplugged.
Insert the LAN card into the available card slot (ISA or PCI whichever applies)
Replug the computer and turn it on.
Have the Win98 disk handy or the card's supplied driver disk, go ahead and put it in the drive.
If the LAN card is plug-and-play, it will detect it, and begin the driver installation process.
Installation procedures may vary, some may have Setup.Exe files, which means you can't use the Win98 plug-and-play feature,
meaning you have to cancel the P&P install and run the LAN's own Setup from the disk.
Otherwise....
Keep clicking next, if you run into a window saying what device to use, select communications and next.
You may end up on a window saying Search for drivers for the Adapter  or  Choose from a List of Drivers.
You can do a search (Next) it will ask for where the drivers would be located,
floppy, CDRom, or specify a location, choose the appropriate.
If your Card's instructions tell where the driver's are at, you can select Browse.

If you Choose from a list of Drivers, the next window shows a list BUT
also has a "Have Disk" button. Click this and you get the above procedure again.

If browsing for the drivers, the setup uses an "*.inf " file, the name may vary, but once found, it will be obvious
when the *.inf files are not grayed out. Click ok out and close, then installation should continue.
The setup may require the Win9x disk(s) and a reboot will be required.

Connect up the 2 computers with the LAN cable.
This will sound similar to the DCC setup.

Now in the control panel open up Network.
You need the TCP/IP protocol for Unreal games.
If not present, click Add...
click protocol then add
then click Microsoft and select TCP/IP, then OK
Both computers need this.
Now back on the main Network window...
for your server computer, click the "TCP/IP -> (Your LAN card Name)".
This opens a new window of TCP/IP properties.
Click the IP Address Tab.
You are about to change the IP address for the computer.
(using the LAN card)
Now click on Specify an IP address.
put the following numbers in (just do it!!!)

IP Address  192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask  255.255.255.0

Click ok, then OK again to close the network window.
Windows will do some work and you may have to have your Win9x disk(s) handy
as it may ask for them, then you will have to reboot the computer.

Tadaa!, part one is done

For the "Client" computer
thats the other one....
Do everything above the same until.....

IP Address  192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

NOW click on Gateway
under New gateway, put.....

192.168.0.1

click Add
Now click OK and Ok
to close all the windows
and reboot.

When adding more computers, just change the IP addy to this
(it will become apparent what you do)

IP Address  192.168.0.3
SubNet Mask  255.255.255.0

(you just add ONE to the IP addy last digit, thats IT!!)
The gateway remains 192.168.0.1 (The server)

(You could add all the other IPs into the gateway, but for simplicity, keep just the one)

Go into Unreal, start a server game on the server,
start multiplay on the other,
choose find local servers, select the game in view and yer off!!

(gee cut and paste is shur handy...)
