Someone seems to have written a nice bot that registers users with the name "zvy1979". I deleted it twice from the forum, and it still defeats my antibot functions. I improved the security a bit again, so I'm interesting if/when it comes back. :p

Google search for zvy1979 gives 44 500 results. Whoever this might be has a lot of user accounts now. :p

It re-registered twice and I deleted it twice. I have to improve my defences again.

Thats a nasty forum bot there lol...

It might go advertizing if you wont remove it. Cant you just put a nameban on the forum? I mean, my forum (yes the crappy proboards thing) allows a ReservedNames table, which you can add names that cannot be used. I already have that name in there.

Regards,
-SR

Yes, in fact, I did it a few hours ago. But it is a bad solution since the bot owner only has to set an option to set a random name to pass this 'protection'.

No no no, that's not the way I'm looking for a solution. I have to change the image verification ot registration procedure to make it different from the standard phpbb forums. Bots get in here because they are tailored for the widespread phpbb forum software, so when I can make it different, it will stop the bots. Nobody is interested in writing a bot for this specific forum alone.

Indeed, but you would need somebody with good PHP knowledge. Ive heard forums are very complicated in PHP.

PS: I also heard, changing the tags of the textboxes sometimes does the trick, for example if the bot cannot find a account and password box. But alot of bots can surpass that too.

It's not neccesary to 'code' it in php since there are several 'mods' available for phpbb that counter the spambots. I applied two of them already, a third one was not compatible with the webserver config at unrealdestination.com.

They do harm. They make the database grow, generate unneccesary traffic, Make administration more work, and they might leave spam.
